The Institute of Agriculture and Research Technology (IART), NMV University, celebrated Pongal Vizha 2026 on 08 January 2026 with great enthusiasm and cultural spirit. The celebration aimed to promote Tamil culture, agricultural traditions and the importance of expressing gratitude to nature, the Sun and farmers for a prosperous harvest season.
The programme was conducted under the leadership of Dr. K. R. Sundaravaradarajan, Vice Chancellor, NMV University, whose continuous encouragement and support inspire innovative academic and cultural initiatives within the institution. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, staff and students.
The celebration began with Tamil Thai Vazhthu, followed by the traditional preparation of Pongal in a clay pot, symbolizing prosperity, gratitude and sustainable living. As part of the festivities, a fish pond was inaugurated with the active participation of students under the guidance of the special guest Dr. M. K. S. L. D. Amarathunga, Head, Department of Export Agriculture, Uva Wellassa University, Sri Lanka, providing valuable practical exposure to students.
The Welcome Address was delivered by Dr. R. Rajalakshmi, Assistant Professor, Department of Agronomy. Subsequently, the Annual Report of the institution was presented by Dr. K. R. Sundaravaradarajan, Vice Chancellor, highlighting the major academic and developmental achievements of the university during the year.
During the programme, the special guest Dr. M. K. S. L. D. Amarathunga was honoured with the “Best Agricultural Extension Research Award” in recognition of his contributions to agricultural research and extension activities. The event also featured the release of the RAWE and All India Tour (AIT) Photo Frame, symbolizing the experiential learning opportunities provided to students. Tokens of appreciation were presented to the university’s security personnel and sanitary workers in recognition of their dedicated service to the institution.
An insightful special lecture on “E’s of Next-Gen Agri Women: Needed Strategies” was delivered by Dr. M. K. S. L. D. Amarathunga, offering valuable perspectives and motivation to students, particularly aspiring women professionals in agriculture. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Dr. M. Vaidheki, Assistant Professor, Department of Agricultural Statistics. The programme was effectively compered by the second and third-year undergraduate students and concluded with the National Anthem.
The afternoon session featured vibrant cultural programmes including Kolattam, Karagattam, traditional dances, folk songs, and traditional games, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu and strengthening the bond between agriculture and tradition.
The celebration emphasized the values of agriculture, respect for farmers, environmental awareness, teamwork, and social harmony. Pongal Vizha 2026 concluded successfully with appreciation extended to the organizing committee, faculty members, student coordinators from all four years and all participants for their dedicated efforts and cooperation.
